Yes, it's certainly a huge blinking light demanding investigation. For my next trick, I'll try to figure out the configuration differences between /etc/ldap/slapd.conf (which I'd simply copied from the old server) and the apparently new cn=config method. Looks like I need to find an openLDAP mailing list to ask my next series of questions in!
