Yes, you could have spaces in a 'workgroup' name. When I started
looking after the computers at work (this was so long ago that win95
had just come out), the computers were all part of a workgroup (well
there were only about 8 computers) that had a space in the workgroup
name (the workgroup was setup by a so called expert).
