Other than running on FreeBSD, is there any other difference between
the Samba versions?
It may be a FreeBSD specific bug. We have an issue that we can't
provision current Samba on FreeBSD also. We don't know why the Samba
python bindings have this issue, and there isn't a lot of use of Samba
on FreeBSD as an AD DC, which means nobody has taken a very serious
look at it.
