We are testing suggested method, please help us how can we test the driver version to ensure that it is 3 or 4.

First, make sure u use a printer level 3 driver. 
I use the HP universal printer driver PCL 6.  ( 6.0.0 and 6.2.1 ) 

Can you open \\hostname.domain.tld ? try it. i assum that works. 
If you saw the driver uploading than is should be on the server.

The error : 0x000006d1  
For a windows 8 and 8.1 and 10. 
You can try this, create a regfile and this in it. 
-------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Printers]
"ForceCSREMFDespooling"=dword:00000000
-------------
Reboot te computer and try again. 

And last option, remove this key. 
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Providers 


To test i suggest use the regkey (ForceCSREMFDespooling ) 

If that works setup the GPO and disable Client-Side Rendering.

And change : Policy: Always render print jobs on the server 
And turn it off
( thats the regkey )
