for which use case do you need avahi?

Unless you definitly need avahi, I'd advise you to disable it 
altogether. You can turn off the service, disable automatic startup, and 
remove mdns from /etc/nsswitch.conf. In your /etc/nsswitch.conf, a clean 
non modified hosts line should look like :

hosts:          files dns

As far as I concerned, avahi/mdns/bonjour is more for non-managed 
home/soho setup. It is more a pain than a help in an enterprise setup.
