Possibly, it may be that permission is being denied to access somewhere 
on the path to the share, this would mean that the user cannot enter 
somewhere to get to the share.

As for putting everything into / , this is not a good idea, if something 
goes wrong, you could use everything. Some sysadmins take it to 
extremes, they create separate partitions for / , /boot , /usr , /var , 
/home /tmp etc, I don't go this far myself, I just separate user data 
from computer data.

Without actually looking at your computer, I cannot say for certain what 
the problem is. From a distance, I can only point out potential problems 
and possible errors. What I can say is that moving the data should not 
make it worse and could cure the problem, but I would only bother doing 
it if I also moved to using separate partitions.
