[Samba] map to guest = Bad Uid not working consistently

OK, lets try it this way, lets say you have a user called 'fred', if you 
turn off samba and then run 'getent passwd fred' , do you get anything 
back ?
  Or to put it another way, do you the usernames stored in AD and NIS (I 
presume you mean on a NIS server)
