I read that "security = share" was deprecated in favor of "security =
user", so that's what I used.

Turns out I had to run "chown nobody" on the share, since this is the
Unix user account Samba relies on by default when using "map to guest
= Bad User".

I'll read some more about how Samba handles user authentication +
authorization.
