The history probably goes something like this:
- we created the 'net' command
- when Tridge and I were at Snap Appliance, he thought that it might
really impress a product reviewer if when they turned on their box for
the first time, that it guessed the time and timezone from the local
network.
- 'net time' was implemented and got the time and timezone from the
Negotiate Protocol response.
- Samba4 forked
- during the rewrite, which attempted to keep the same set of commands,
hooking into random bits of SMB got harder, so we switched 'net time' to
make an authenticated DCE/RPC call
- net(4) became samba-tool
In short, never put down to design what can be better explained by 14
years of history :-)
