Like a motorcycle can replace a tractor trailer. If all you need is to
carry a load of groceries, or say be a limited CIFS file server and
print server for a small environment, with no authentication or DNS,
sure.

If you want DNS, more robust file and print servers, backup, and a
host that can resist every script kiddie who's already rootkitted
laptops in your local VLAN, well, use a decent Samba based server or
hire a full IT team to manage a Windows 2012 server for you.
