4.0.0 is also almost 2 years old. You should try 4.1.12 or if there's a
good reason to stay at 4.0, then the latest of that tree (4.0.22).

You can get packages of Samba from SerNet, if you don't want to compile
it by yourself.

You can setup a test machine and bring it into your domain, to see, if
the problem exists with that version, too.
