When you install samba4 from backports it is set up just like it was
previously with 3.6, it is then up to you to decide which direction to
go, fileserver, PDC, BDC, AD DC etc.

No, it isn't a NT4 style domain controller (PDC)

Bit too much to go into here really, but a PDC is old technology and can
use different backends (LDAP, tdbsam etc) , a DC is based on Active
Directory and will give you proper SSO. For more info I suggest
searching the internet with 'Active Directory'
