[Samba] Winbind: daemon or not daemon?

Hi all,

Following the discussions about unix users from AD, I could not find a 
document to serve as a starting point to figure the differences and 
features of the internal winbind implementation versus winbind daemon. 
Google results does not make clear if the results are outdated or not. 
Can someone point me to the correct docs to start with the big picture?
