I finally solved my problem.
I was missing the group_mapping file. For some reason, the 
group_mapping.tdb was renamed to group_mapping.tdb.upgraded so my "find" 
for "*.tdb" did not find that file. When I looked in /var/lib/samba I 
also found a group_mapping.ldb file, so I used that. Now "smbtool 
classicupgrade ..." does not crash.

Now I can proceed with my tests.
