can you check the wins settings in smb.conf.   If this is a WINS server 
it should say

     wins support = yes


The "wins  server" parameter would be used if this was a wins CLIENT , 
and you were specifying which wins server this client machine should use.

Packet capturing allows you to copy the ethernet traffic between 
devices, or between the your machine and other devices.  You can use 
wireshark or tcpdump.  It isn't relevant in this case since  log 
entries  are being triggered by the server itself, not another machine.

"LINUX<00>" is the netbios name for the workstation service.

Is this server configured as a "NT4/Samba3" type PDC or an AD 
controller?  If this an AD domain.   If this is an AD domain you might 
not even need the nmbd daemon running.
