The version of cifs-utils on CentOS 6.4:

cifs-utils-4.8.1-18.el6.x86_64

is definitely too old. While I did get the automount to work after
manually mounting the home share, after the timeout period the automount
disappeared and I could no longer see home directories again. So at this
point I have 3 options:

1. just use nfs
2. manually mount the home share in fstab
3. try and build 5.9-94.5 or 6.0-1 from Fedora Core

I am working on number 3. I have the problem that the configure cannot
find the sernet-samba-libwclient-devel header and dynamic library files
/usr/include/wbclient.h and /usr/lib64/libwbclient.so respectively. If I
can sort that out it looks like cifs-utils will build and the mount
issues disappear. I'll post back if I have success. In the meantime I am
just going to opt for 1.

Steve again thanks for your help.
