No registry hack here.
Under 
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManWorkstation\Parameters 
I don't have the entries DomainCompatibilityMode and 
DNSNameResolutionRequired:

So both are on default.

My Samba 4 installation is AD (not a NT4-style domain).

So I would say, it's not required for Samba AD. But maybe if Samba is 
providing a NT4 style domain.
