Andrew,

  There is nothing on the server side log (damn systemd/journalctl -f). Client
side, I get the immediate error:

04:38 providence:~/scr/mnt> sudo mount.cifs //phoinix/config /mnt/phx-cfg/ -o
username=david,uid=1000,credentials=/home/david/.dcr/mountcfile,noperm
mount error(13): Permission denied
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)

  and then in the client log I get:

Dec 6 04:38:46 providence kernel: [49327.535820] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed
w/return code = -13

  The client has:

cifs-utils 5.6-2
pmount 0.9.23-4
samba 3.6.7-2

  I'm not sure what parts of those packages play into the mount.cifs attempt,
but they are included for completeness. I'm not doing anything different in my
smb.conf or in the way I mount or designate things. It has been the same since
the 2.0 days.

  What else do you want me to send you? The 4.1.2 package is from:

https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/samba/
