In AD we have:
objectClass: posixAccount
and
uidNumber: xyz

with /etc/nsswitch.conf conatining:
passwd: compat ldap

nss-ldapd (for example) pulls the uidNumber fine using:
getent passwd

Is that what we are talking about?
