Hi Steve,
Check other parameters that Volker mentioned and how they can affect 
each other, for example (from man smb.conf for 3.5.8)
unix extensions (G):
...
Note if this parameter is turned on, the wide links parameter will 
automatically be disabled.

Default: unix extensions = yes
