I tried newly installed Win8 64bit, modified two registry values and successed
 to join and logon to the Samba 3.6.6 domain.

My smb.conf is:

workgroup = SAMBA366
domain logons = yes
passdb backend = tdbsam

add machine script = /usr/sbin/useradd -d /dev/null -s /bin/false %u

[homes]
writeable = yes
browseable = no
