Hmmm. I just tested with top-of-tree 3.6.x and the settings:

store dos attributes = no
dos filemode = yes
map readonly = yes

and using smbclient "setmode" command I can toggle
the user "w" bit on the server by doing :

smb: \> setmode filename +r
smb: \> setmode filename -r
