Use an older gcc? I pulled down gcc-3.3 using zypper.

$ CPP=/usr/bin/cpp-3.3 CC=/usr/bin/gcc-3.3 ./configure.developer
--prefix=/opt/s4
Checking for program gcc or cc : /usr/bin/gcc-3.3
Checking for program ar : /usr/bin/ar
Checking for program ranlib : /usr/bin/ranlib
...

But when it gets down to the TLS stuff it still fails.
