This ia a vimrc issue not a samba issue. Google will be your friend.

on Debian I'm using  VIM 7.2.445
on RedHat I'm using VIM 6.3.82

I verified in both systems with this command : vi -v

on Debian it is possible that you are using the orginal VI. On RedHat you must be using ViM (VI Improved). Do you have vim on Debian
