WOW...I've finally figured it out.  The /lib/libnss_winbind.so.2 file
has to have a symbolic link which was missing after the upgrade.
[/lib] # ln -s libnss_winbind.so.2  libnss_winbind.so

Once I reinstated this link, I issued net rpc join command (which was
always working) then restarted winbindd and voila it works! :-)
