As well, I've had some good performance on FreeBSD with

aio_load="YES" in /boot/loader.conf

and

aio read size = 1000
        aio write size = 1000
        aio write behind = false

You're using wireless, yes?  Hopefully a fully kernel driver and not a 
blob?
