I know you are in the middle of this and this is not very helpful but for future reference:

If you have critical Samba support needs,  I would recommend you contract a samba support company.   It is what we do and we are able to react to emergencies immediately when necessary when we put the right resources in place.

Hello Helmut:

The VP won't let me post the file. I don't want to sound critical here, but
how come John and Jeremy did not know that the debuglevel option was not in
the config file, or what the log file was called? I'm in the middle of a
very serious data recovery operation, and need help pretty badly...
