[Samba] my first samba set-up gives me a headache

That also looks fine. Now I'm a bit lost. If it runs fine
under gdb and valgrind but crashes if run plain, then the
only way to catch this is to instrument the source code with
additional debug statements. This however becomes a bit more
difficult, you would have to install the RHEL source RPM,
rebuild it and edit the source files that are hopefully left
under /usr/src/redhat/BUILD.

Sorry, from here on you're a bit on your own. But as you
probably have RHEL support, maybe they can help you.
