The base pware code was compiled on 5.2 and the pware53 code was compiled on 5.3. They likely won't run on 5.1 due to missing symbols in /unix and other libraries.
Also, long usernames were not supported in 5.3 until TL-07 and are supported completely in 6.1.
For the record, AIX 4.3.3 was dropped in 12/2003, 5.1 was dropped in 4/2006 and 5.2 will be dropped by IBM in 4/2009. That leaves 5.3 and 6.1 as the only real viable choces. If IBM follows the three year cycle implied by the above, this means 5.3 will likely be dropped in 2012, but I've seen no such official announcement of any kind.
