What about debian packages? I get dependency errors trying to install
the sernet binaries. Any steps for creating debian packages from source?

This is what I do (CentOS 5):

1. Get the samba source
2. Unpack
3. cd samba-xxx/packaging/RHEL
4. ./makerpms.sh
5. cd /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/x86_64
6. rpm -Uvh samba...

In this way I get to use the latest samba source
without breaking the rpm setup.
