[Samba] Newbie cannot install from source

Env: Mandriva 2007 with recent updates. 
I go into the source directory as root
./configure,
 make, 
make install 
Using 3.024 and 3.025rc3 with the same result. usr/local/samba/bin/smbpasswd
is a shared library.
