[Samba] Static compilation and Samba 3.0.23c

Working on a FC4 box.
Samba 3.0.23c Source Package.

I would like to know if it is possible to compile samba statically?
I need to port it to a minimal embedded box.

I tried tweaking ./configure enable-static=yes
and also setting
LDFLAGS and CFLAGS = -static

But still, make reported lot of warning and failed
at the Link stage of 'smbd'.

Appreciate all your help in this regard.
