Sorry, I would like to clarify what's your problem.
By "soft links" you mean symlinks in unix-like
environment? Or you mean "MS Windows Shortcuts"? Maybe
a more detailed example (and your smb.conf) could help
to understand what's going on.

Any chance that is related with your 'follow symlinks'
