Thankyou for responding. Using security=domain, without winbind Vista clients fail to authenticate, log.smbd just logs that the connection attempt failed due to invalid password. I actually filed a bug report, 4365, about this a few weeks ago, https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4365, but then I closed the bug report when I discovered running winbindd would allow Vista to authenticate, I didn't know it was going to cause my "add user script" to no longer function.
