First - that is an old reference (May 2003) - before 3.0 was released...

Yes, but I think you are misreading this...

It is not telling you to add 'users = %S' to the [homes] share - it said:

"The only user works in conjunction with the users = list", and then it 
said:

"adding the line: users = %S... IS THE EQUIVALENT OF adding 'valid users 
= %S' TO THE DEFINITION OF THE HOMES share."

I read this as, the 'only user' and the 'users = list' is some other way 
of validating users...

At least, thats how I read it.

In all honesty, I'm not sure what this 'The only user' is...
