For a core dump, add the lines :

panic action = /bin/sleep 999999

to the [global] section of your smb.conf, and
reproduce the problem. The smbd will hang waiting
for the sleep to finish, allowing you to attach
to the waiting smbd process with gdb. You can then
print out a backtrace with symbols which is a much
more helpful review of the problem.
