Because "Chris" is now the owner of the directory and the Unix file
system permissions are kicking in.  I'd recommend that you check out the
wonderful "By example" guide at:

http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/

There are some examples that will show you how to set up what you require.
