"Preauth failed" indicates a bad machine password.
So this really wouldn't be affected by any SMB signing
settings.  Why do you recommend disabling SPNEGO in
the client code?

My guess is that there are multiple DCs and we are
dealing with a period of inconsistency between DCs.
