make sure wins server is set correctly in smb.conf
make sure nmbd is running. 
try # pstree -Gpua | more
to see your process tree

lmhosts files are a PITA - don't use them.
set the WINS server address on the clients (TCP/IP-->Advanced
button-->WINS tab in the NIC settings)
