Well after lots of experimenting, and more googling, I got it sussed, and
thought I'd pass on the info in case it ever helps anyone else.

It turns out that Fedora Core 6 has something called SELinux.  Now I don't
know much about it exactly, but it seems from my testing/debugging that this
adds some extra kernel level security into the system.  Disabling this
allowed me to access my samba shares (hint: you could probably change it's
settings rather than the big switch off, but I figure this sort of thing is
going to come and bite me again in the future, so off it goes).
