[Samba] usermap confusion (":" or "=")

According to
http://us3.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/NetCommand.html#id2571949there
should a be ":" between a users UNIX login and their Windows login in
the "username map" file, is that correct? According to the man page there
should be an "=" between them.
The reason I ask is because I am trying to get username maps to work in
Samba 3.0.9-1.3E.10 on RHEL v3 and the only thing that works is creating a
UNIX account with the same name as the Windows account. I get the error
message below
[2006/08/28 09:54:30, 5] auth/auth.c:check_ntlm_password(271)
check_ntlm_password: winbind authentication for user [WindowsLoginName]
FAILED with error NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER
[2006/08/28 09:54:30, 2] auth/auth.c:check_ntlm_password(312)
check_ntlm_password: Authentication for user [WindowsLoginName] ->
[UNIXLoginName] FAILED with error NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER
[2006/08/28 09:54:30, 5] auth/auth_util.c:free_user_info(1318)
The same username map worked in Samba 2.X
