During the day 99.9% of the time the load avg. on the server is just fine, however at times all the smbd processes go into a "run" state and put load avg. on the server to over 300. This only lasts for a couple of minutes and then goes away. The smbd process count is normally around 400-600 all day. So Its not like an all of a sudden excessive load.

Can you attach to an smbd process in that state and get a gdb backtrace
or a "truss" output ? Remember to build with -g to get symbols.

Jeremy.
