The other thing you could do is enable acl support for ext3.  This has 
helped considerably with our RHEL4 server doing samba.

In your /etc/fstab, change this

/dev/sda1  /  ext3   defaults   1 1

to

/dev/sda1  /  ext3   defaults,acl   1 1
