I forgot to say, if, in konqueror, I connect to it 
connects without a problem.  If I try for anne-linux/anne I get the login 
dialogue loop.  All boxes on the lan are properly defined with ip, long 
name and short name in the hosts file.

Nscd is now installed on both boxes.
