[Samba] Help adding users

I am using Samba on Solaris 8.  It is Samba version
3.0.10.  I am trying to add a user as root using
smbpasswd -a name.  I am receiving this error message
after typing in the passwords:

"NULL guest account!?!?
 Failed to initialise SAM_ACCOUNT for user name.  Does
this user exist in the UNIX password database?
 Failed to modify password entry for user name"

Yes the user is in the UNIX password database.  I have
looked at the configurations and do not see anything
wrong.  I do have a Samba version 2.2.8 running on
another machine and working just fine.  I tried to
match the conf between the two.
