How do I get a more verbose output?

  mount.cifs //fileserver/ /mountpoint -o credentials=auth_file
  mount error 13 = Permission denied
  Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)

Also, are you saying it's not possible to simply view what shares are
available like I was able to with smbclient?
