[Samba] Group membership problem migrating from Samba 2 to Samba 3

Hi,
I'm building up a new server to replace an old one running Samba2. The new
server is running Samba 3 and I'm having a problem getting it to recognise my
groups in /etc/groups.
I'm using the old smbpasswd backend, not the new tbdsam database.

I've copied my smb.conf, and the files from /usr/local/private across to the
new machine, as well as /etc/group and migrated the user accounts accross I
can login OK from a workstation, but I can't get access to any shares other
than the home directory & netlogon.

Looking in the log files, the problem seems to be that samba doesn't recognise
groups:

[2005/08/07 13:19:27, 1] smbd/service.c:make_connection_snum(466)
  Couldn't find group @tech

The groups do exist - I've checked the group file & used groups to check the
user really is in the group, but samba won't find it for some reason.

I can't seem to find any record of others having this problem in the list
archive. Is version 3 looking for group information somewhere other
than /etc/group?

I'm running samba 3.0.14a on FreeBSD 5.4. It's installed via the FreeBSD port.

Cheers,
