Not only.
OS/2 uses EAs a lot, e.g. the WPS (the explorer.exe equivalent from 
Windows) stores windows positions, sort options, and many more this way.

Yeah. I suppose so. With Samba 2.2.x I could work with shares with the 
WPS: the only problem was I lost window positions, sort options, icons, 
and so on at every client reboot. I could easily live with that though.
With 3.x things got seriously worse.
