You need to give a user with uid = 0 to add a machine to the domain, or
at least you would if you were having it create the user automatically,
but I would guess you still need to give a root-ish user. This smb.conf
looks like it came from a 2.2 system with the 'domain admin group'
parameter since that isn't a valid parameter any more. Also, I believe
you would have a better time with tdbsam over smbpasswd. Correct me if
I'm wrong, but I don't believe smbpasswd can store the extra parameters
that tdbsam can.
I'd back out any of the manual changes you've done to /etc/passwd and
smbpasswd (or just delete smbpasswd altogether and switch to tdbsam) and
try to take a run at it giving root as the user when Windows asks for it.
