Have you tried to disable "unix extensions" in smb.conf (https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=999)?

Have you testet this under SuSE 9.0 or 9.1?
I have the same or a similar problem and did not have any success with older smb clients and SuSE 9.1 (http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2004-October/093862.html) - seems to be a problem with kernel 2.6.
